Homme le plus riche du Japon en 2011 d’après le magazine Forbes avec une fortune personnelle estimée à 8,1 milliards de dollars, il est le fondateur et le PDG de Softbank. Son entreprise est le 3ème plus gros opérateur de téléphonie mobile au Japon et le 1er fournisseur d’accès internet du pays, elle compte plus de 19 500 employés.
D’origine coréenne, Masayoshi Son est doté dès son adolescence d’un tempérament audacieux. A peine âgé de seize ans, sans rendez-vous, il va à la rencontre de son idole Den Fujita, le fondateur et président visionnaire de Mac Donald Japan. Celui-ci va lui conseiller d’étudier l’anglais et de s’orienter vers l’industrie informatique pour réussir. Sans hésitation, il abandonne le lycée pour traverser le Pacifique et gagner les Etats-Unis. Là, il étudie à l’université californienne de Berkeley et invente le traducteur mécanique, qu’il vend à Sharp pour un million de dollars. Il ressort bientôt diplômé en économie du prestigieux établissement, non sans avoir acquis de solides connaissances en informatique.
En 1981, il revient dans son pays natal et fonde sa société à seulement 23 ans: Nihon Softbank, un distributeur de software. Mais deux ans plus tard, il est atteint d’une hépatite qui l’oblige à passer beaucoup de temps à l’hôpital jusqu’en 1987. Cela ne l’empêche pas entretemps de nouer des partenariats avec Microsoft au Japon et de prendre une participation de 25% dans la société d’informatique Novell Japan.
Ce n’est qu’en 1990 qu’il obtient enfin la citoyenneté japonaise, une fierté pour ce petit-fils d’émigré coréen. En 1995, il rachète Ziff Davis Media, le plus important éditeur spécialisé en informatique, et l’année suivante, prend une participation dans ce qui n’était alors qu’une start-up : Yahoo!, et crée Yahoo! Japan.
La même année, Softbank rachète COMDEX (Computer Dealer Exhibition), exposition géante consacrée à l’informatique organisée entre autres par Sheldon Adelson à Las Vegas, pour 900 millions de dollars et Kingston Technology pour 2,1 milliards de dollars.
Quatre ans plus tard, il investi encore et mise cette fois sur le site chinois Alibaba fondé par Jack Ma. Lorsque sept ans plus tard la société sera introduite en Bourse, Softbank encaissera une plus-value latente de plus de 3 milliards de dollars.
En 2003, Softbank devient le premier fournisseur d’accès internet au Japon. L’année suivante, Masayoshi Son acquiert Japan Telecom et en 2006 il rachète Vodafone Japan pour 1700 milliards de yens, soit 14 milliards de dollars.
Mais il mobilise également beaucoup d’argent pour aider ses contemporains, en 2011, après le tsunami qui a frappé le Japon au mois de mars, il décide de reverser 10 milliards de yens, soit 119 millions de dollars, pour venir en aide aux victimes.
A noter que la croissance annuelle moyenne des actifs nets de Softbank est de 28% sur les vingt-sept dernières années, pour « seulement » 21% pour Bershire Hathaway (Warren Buffett) et 35% pour Microsoft (Bill Gates).
